Always use AVS: Avoid non-qualified surcharges when keying in a sale by using Address Verification Service (AVS), a program that allows you to key in the street number and Zip Code of where a customer gets his credit card statement. If the address matches you should only be charged a mid-qualified surcharge. (average .88% more.)
Batch-out Each Day: Batching out your terminal everyday eliminates further surcharges imposed if authorizations were given over 48 hours prior to your batch. If possible, use a host based system that does not store the transactions in your terminal. Another solution is an Automatic Batch where the terminal is programmed to upload the transactions in the middle of the night. Keep in mind, that because the Automatic Batch relies on electric and an open phone line to work properly, it is not foolproof.
